Career Paths

Aircraft Maintenance and Overhaul

PROGRAMME SUMMARY
ATASA Aircraft Maintenance and Overhaul program is designed to enable students to achieve their South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) Aircraft Maintenance Engineers Licence, along with their Trade
Certificate/Diploma.
This qualification is designed to be flexible and accessible so that people are able to demonstrate the competencies required to work safely and productively in the different disciplines within an Aircraft Maintenance and Overhaul environment. Recipients of this qualification will have knowledge and skills in the areas of fundamental skills;
 Aircraft Airframes
 Aircraft Power Plant
 Aircraft Electrical
 Aircraft Instruments
 Aircraft Radio (Navigation and Communication Systems)
 Aircraft Structures.
 Occupational Health & Safety Environment
 Quality

Simulator Maintenance EngineerThe simulator maintenance technology (sim tech) program is one of the few training programs for simulator technicians in South Africa. The program provides hands-on training in computer systems, digital and solid state electronic devices. Printed circuit troubleshooting and a variety of other systems essential to the operation to today’s simulators.

Students in the Sim Tech program will be prepared for troubleshooting, repair and maintenance of electronics and mechanical components of simulators in all applications. Students learn to use specialized tools, test equipment, built-in diagnostic equipment and technical data to isolate and locate faulty components or system malfunctions. Sim Tech students are encouraged to participate in an elective two to three month on-site cooperation education experience with a simulator maintenance crew.

Aircraft Performance Engineering

Aircraft performance engineering includes many aspects of an airplanes operation. Here we deal with a few of the most important performance measures including airfield performance, climb, and cruise. The following sections describe how each of these may be calculated at the early stages of design, by combining fundamental calculations with statistical data from actual aircrafts.

When we speak of aircraft performance we’re usually answering three basic questions:

> How much can I haul?
> How far can I go?
> How long will it take me?

It sounds simple but a specific set of interdependent variables must be considered in order to answer each of these questions. Most of these variables have to do with aircraft performance, with aircraft accident investigation findings having proven that causal factors of accidents is the unreasonable expectations of aircraft performance – especially when operating at the edges of the aircraft envelope. Understanding and calculation of aircraft performance is arguable an important element of aircraft safety.
