Aircraft Maintenance and Overhaul

This qualification recognises that candidates may opt to specialise in one field or more depending on choice. Specializing in two or more fields will take a minimum of 2 years such a candidate will be multi skilled and such are in high depend in the current market due the new generation aircraft technology requirements.

The certificate will be issued in one field of specialisation or more (refer to fields given below) depending on the candidate’s career choice.

The qualification can be obtained on a full or part time basis.

National Certificate: Aircraft Maintenance and Overhaul-Mechanical
The focus of this programme is on the diagnosis, rectification and maintenance of aircraft airframes, engines, components and related systems.

The programme covers the following units:
aircraft structures, aircraft engines and all related aircraft systems, such as hydraulics, pneumatic power, landing gear, electrical instruments and much more.
National Certificate: Aircraft Maintenance and Overhaul-Electrical
The learner will be trained to diagnose faults on electrical systems, to carry out periodic inspections and to maintain, repair and overhaul all electrical components.
Training also includes wiring of the aircraft to ensure a power supply to all systems.
National Certificate: Aircraft Maintenance and Overhaul-Electro-Mechanical
Here, “electro-” refers to “electronic”.
Given rapid advances in technology, new-generation aircraft are computer-dependent and mechanical work is greatly impacted upon by an understanding of aircraft flight computers.
National Certificate: Aircraft Maintenance and Overhaul-Instruments
The training involves repairs, measuring and testing equipment used for the tracing of circuits and measuring of circuit values.
The trainee also learns how to install navigational and flying instruments, such as the automatic pilot and electronic compasses.
The course includes principles of electricity, magnetic and electromagnetic principles, the theory of aircraft instruments and electronics.
National Certificate: Aircraft Maintenance and Overhaul-Radio
The course focuses on the maintenance of all communication equipment used in the aircraft industry.
This includes checking, repairing and testing all radio equipment, including the installation of radio equipment on the aircraft.

Admission requirements
  • 18 year and above
  • Matric or equivalent qualification
  • Matric or equivalent with the following subjects:
    English, Physical Science and Mathematics NQF level 3 (compulsory)
  • Or
  • Recognition of prior learning
  • Current practising operators/semi-skilled
  1. Full time Learners: 24 Months. (This is divided as follows, 18 months theory and practical training, followed by Additional 6 months on-job training)
